Abstract

Resins are prepared by reacting together fatty or resinous monobasic acids, polybasic acids, polyhydric alcohols and masticated copal resins prepared according to Specification 444,853 at a temperature below 240 DEG C. There may be used Congo, Benguela, Pontianac, Manila, and Kauri copals. As fatty or resinous monobasic acids may be used the acids of linseed, wood, and castor oils, octodecadienic acid, oleic acid, and lauric acid, abietic acid, colophony, or fused copal; as polybasic acids phthalic anhydride, maleic, nitric, succinic, or sebacic acids; and as polyhydric alcohols glycol, glycerol, or mannitol. The masticated copal resins may be heated with the fatty or resinous monobasic acids, and the polybasic acids and polyhydric alcohols added. There may be added before, during, or after condensation neutral modifying agents, e.g. drying or non-drying oils such as linseed, perilla, wood, soya and coconut oils; neutral resinous substances such as rosin esters, resene-containing gums and coumarone. The resins may be used for coating-compositions (combined with oils, resins, driers, pigments, solvents or other coating-materials), impregnating - compositions, moulding - compounds, cements, and adhesives. In an example: masticated Congo copal, phthalic anhydride, rosin, and glycerol are heated to 230 DEG C. for half-an-hour to obtain an oil-soluble resin.
