Abstract
"Short oil modified alkyd resins" are obtained by first preparing a homogenous solution by heating together (a) a fatty acid containing not less than 12 carbon atoms in the molecule or a natural resin acid, (b) polyhydric alcohol in excess of one mol. per mol. of (a), and (c) sufficient water-insoluble polybasic acid to form said homogeneous solution but insufficient to combine with all the hydroxyl groups, and then heating the solution with a water-soluble dibasic acid other than oxalic acid. By a "short oil modified alkyd resin" is meant a polyhydric alcohol esterified with a monobasic acid and with more than one polybasic acid, the total of the last being more than one mol. per mol. of monobasic acid; the monobasic acid being that defined at (a) above, and the polybasic acids comprising both a water-insoluble polybasic acid and a water-soluble dibasic acid. In a modification, some of the polyhydric alcohol is combined with the acid (a) to form a partial, e.g. mono-, ester, which may be heated with the remaining ingredients or a partial ester thereof. There are specified: water-insoluble acids-phthalic, adipic; water-soluble acids-maleic, succinic, itaconic, malic, tartaric; monobasic acids-lauric acid, acids of vegetable oils, e.g. linseed oil, soya bean oil; polyhydric alcohols-glycerol, glycol, mannitol. The reaction may be carried out under reduced pressure, or in an inert gas: these may be added at any stage. In examples: soya bean oil fatty acid or monoglyceride, phthalic anhydride, and glycerol are condensed together, then maleic anhydride added and reaction continued; linseed oil monoglyceride, glycerol, and adipic acid are condensed, then succinic acid added and reaction continued; soya bean oil monoglyceride, glycol or mannitol, and phthalic anhydride are condensed, then maleic anhydride added and reaction continued: lauric acid, glycerol, and phthalic anhydride are condensed, then maleic anhydride added and reaction continued. In some cases the products are soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and suitable for stoving enamels.
