Abstract

Modified alkyds are prepared from a polyhydric alcohol with at least three hydroxyl groups, an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid with a chain of at least 3 carbon atoms between two carboxylic groups, a natural resin acid and a drying or semi-drying oil fatty acid, the proportions by weight of the ingredients based on the weight of product being at least 10 per cent for the polycarboxylic acid and being greater in the case of both the resinic acid and the monobasic acid. In preferred alkyds the proportions are 10-20 per cent polycarboxylic acid; 35-45 per cent natural resin acid and 30-40 per cent fatty acid. Polyhydric alcohols specified are glycerol, erythritol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, di- and poly-pentaerythritol. Polybasic acids are glutaric, adipic, methyladipic, pimelic, sebacic or the adducts produced from an aliphatic a b -unsaturated polycarboxylic compound, e.g. maleic anhydride and fatty acids with conjugated double bonds, e.g. ricinenic acid, or eleostearic acid or the corresponding oils. The chain portion of the adduct not between carboxylic groups is counted as fatty acid for the purposes of the invention. A tall oil fraction containing abietic acid and rather less fatty acids may provide both of the other ingredients. Rosin, manila or congo copal may also be used. The fatty acids may be replaced by the oils after alcoholysis with the polyhydric alcohol used. Products are soluble in petroleum hydrocarbons and with added driers yield hard, elastic films. Pigments may be added. The alkyd may be mixed with other alkyds. In examples: (1) tall oil (60 per cent abietic acid and 40 per cent fatty acids), pentaerythritol and adipic acid are heated together until the product has an acid number of about 10. Product may be dissolved in mineral spirits and mixed with zinc oxide. The pentaerythritol and tall oil may first be reacted and the adipic acid then added. (2) Chinawood oil is heated with maleic anhydride, and rosin, linseed oil, pentaerythritol and glycerol are added and the mixture heated until the acid number is 15 or less.
