Abstract

A drying-oil or mixture of drying-oils is condensed with a polybasic acid (mixed with the oil as such or in the form of anhydride together with an amount of water at least theoretically sufficient to convert the anhydride to acid) by heating under such increased pressure that dehydration of the acid is prevented, and subsequently condensing the reaction product with a polyhydric alcohol, and/or with a partially esterified polyhydric alcohol containing at least one free hydroxyl group. The first condensation preferably takes place at 280 to 300 DEG C., and may be in the presence of oil-splitting catalysts, e.g. cobalt naphthenate, sodium glycerate; and the second stage preferably takes place between 220 and 280 DEG C., when there may be added natural acidic resins, e.g. colophony, run copal. As drying-oils there may be used linseed, chinawood, perilla, and soya bean oils; as polybasic acids, phthalic and maleic acids; as polyhydric alcohols, glycol, glycerol, and pentaerythritol. In examples: varnish linseed oil is heated under pressure with (1) phthalic anhydride and water in the presence of cobalt naphthenate at 300 DEG C., (2) phthalic acid at 280--290 DEG C., (3) maleic acid at 280--290 DEG C., and the product condensed with glycerol at (1) and (2) 240 DEG C., (3) 220 DEG C. The resin dissolved in white spirit or turpentine, with the addition of siccatives forms a varnish or enamel medium, Specifications 285,459, [Class 2 (iii)], 370,440, and 470,472 are referred to.
