Abstract

Resinous compositions are prepared by heating a polyhydric alcohol with a solution of a phenol-aldehyde condensation product in the presence of, if desired, a basic catalyst and heating the product with a polybasic acid in the presence or absence of a further quantity of a polyhydric alcohol. Suitable phenolaldehyde condensation products include those prepared by condensing formaldehyde with hydroxydiphenyls, p-p<1>-dihydroxydiphenyl, tertiary-amylphenol, tertiary-heptylphenol, di(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl) dimethylmethane or di(4-hydroxy-3-chlorphenyl) dimethylmethane. Other aldehydes that may be used include paraformaldehyde, methylene chloride, hexamethylenetetramine, benzaldehyde or acealdehyde. Drying oils include linseed, china wood, perilla, hempseed, walnut, citicica, fecan, safflower, sunflower or rubberseed. Suitable polyhydric alcohols include glycerol, glycol, diethylene glycol, diglycerol, pentaerythritol, monoethylin, mannitol, or monobenzylin. Suitable polybasic acids include phthalic, maleic, succinic, sebacic, adipic, malic, citric, tartaric, dilactylic, diphenic, naphthalic, quinolinic acids or their anhydrides. Suitable basic catalysts include oxides or hydroxides such as barium or sodium hydroxide, lime or sodium glycerate. In examples (1) a resin derived from hydroxydiphenyl and formaldehyde is dissolved in chinawood oil and then heated with glycerin in the presence of litharge and linseed oil, the product is then heated with phthalic anhydride in the presence or absence of glycerin and thinned with bi-flash naphtha or mixtures thereof with mineral spirits and a manganese drier to give a varnish; (4) paper is coated with the varnish prepared in example (2) and coated with sand or other abrasive and then baked to yield a sandpaper.
