Abstract

Tung oil and/or tung oil fatty acid modified polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid condensation products further modified, if desired, with other drying oil acids, are mixed with an oil soluble phenolic body or with a phenolic body compatible with the condensation products before, during or after the condensation. Suitable phenolic bodies are the hydroxydiphenyls, a - and b -naphthol, p-amylphenols, o-n-butylphenol, p-benzylphenol, o-benzylphenol, salicylic acid and resorcinol. Polyhydric alcohols include glycerol, mannitol, pentaerythritol, polyglycerols and glycol and polybasic acids include phthalic anhydride, adipic, sebacic, succinic and maleic acids, the hydrophthalic acids and the acids derived from the action of maleic acid and compounds containing conjugated double bonds. In an example, the condensation product of glycerol, phthalic anhydride, tung oil, tung oil fatty acids and linseed oil fatty acids is heated with a mixture of o-hydroxydiphenyl and tung oil, diluted with turpentine and mixed with cobalt and lead linoleates to yield a varnish.
