Abstract

Resinous compositions are prepared by condensing together a polyhydric alcohol partially esterified with a fatty acid derived from a drying or semi-drying oil such as linseed oil, tung oil or soya bean oil with a phenol and an aldehyde or a liquid non-resinous reaction product of a phenol and an aldehyde in the presence of a volatile organic solvent, and in the presence or absence of a condensing agent such as caustic soda, ammonia, lime or zinc oxide, but in the absence of natural resins or resinates. The partial ester may also contain the radical of a non-fatty acid such as phthalic or benzoic acids. Suitable phenols include phenol, cresol, xylenol, p-hydroxydiphenyl, resorcinol or a - or b -naphthol. Suitable aldehydes include formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, paraldehyde, trionymethylene, polyoxymethylene and hexamethylenetetramine. Suitable fatty acids include oleic and linoleic acid and the fatty acids of soya bean oil and tung oil. Suitable polyhydric alcohols include glycerol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, pentaerythritol and sorbitol. Suitable diluents include butyl alcohol, industrial methylated spirits and cyclohexanol. The partial ester may be prepared by heating the tri-ester with the polyhydric alcohol in the presence of a basic catalyst such as litharge, caustic soda, lime or an alcoholate of an alkaline earth metal. The products may be used in the manufacture of varnishes. In examples (i) phenol that has been condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda is heated with the product obtained by heating glycerol with linseed oil, soya bean oil or tung oil; (2) xylenol, formaldehyde and tung oil and/or linseed oil monoglyoxide are heated together in the presence of caustic soda and methylated spirit; (8) resorcinol, paraldehyde, tung oil monoglyceride, butanol and a solution of caustic soda in methylated spirit, or xylenol, formaldehyde, methylated spirit, caustic soda and the mixed diglyceride of linseed oil fatty acids and phthalic acid, are heated together and the product diluted with butanol with or without the addition of a lead or manganese drier may be used as a varnish.
