Abstract
Resinous compounds are prepared by heating b -elaeostearic acid with maleic anhydride or a substance capable of yielding it and subsequently esterifying the product or by heating b -elaeostearin with maleic anhydride. The b -elaeostearic acid or b -elaeostearin may be obtained from tung oil by treating it with iodine, sulphur or sulphur dichloride or by the action of light. b -Couepin, derived from citicica oil may be used instead of b -elaeostearin. In examples: (1) b -elaeostearin was heated with maleic anhydride in the presence of a current of nitrogen to give a viscous mass soluble in acetone, alcohol, ether, benzene, turpentine and glacial acetic acid and miscible with linseed oil and solutions of the product with or without the addition of driers dry to a hard film; (2) the product obtained by treating a mixture of tung oil and linseed oil with iodine is dissolved in p turpentine, treated with maleic anhydride and a cobalt linoleate drier added to the resulting solution to yield, with or without the addition of a resin ester, a resinous phenolaldehyde condensation product or a di- or polyhydric alcohol, a varnish; (3) the product obtained by treating a solution of tung oil in xylene or turpentine with iodine followed if desired by a heat-treatment is treated with maleic anhydride to yield a varnish which may be heated with a di- or polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol or glycerine or with quicklime or other anhydrous alkaline earth or alkali to increase the viscosity; (4) the product of interaction of maleic anhydride and b -elaeostearin is dissolved in a mixture of xylene and butyl alcohol or turpentine together with cobalt and manganese linoleates and zinc white.
