Abstract
Artificial resins are prepared by reacting hexahydroxycyclohexane or the mono- or di-methyl ether thereof with one or more polybasic acids or anhydrides thereof in the presence or absence of modifying agents such as drying oils, semi-drying oils, non-drying oils, natural resins or their corresponding acids or other monobasic acids. The reaction may take place in the presence of solvents such as tetrahydronaphthalene, entraining liquids such as xylene or known esterification catalysts such as phosphoric acid, calcium glycerate or litharge. Suitable polyhydroxy compounds include inositol, quebrachitol, pinite and dambonite. The resins, which are compatible with cellulose derivatives such as nitro- or benzyl. cellulose, may be used, if desired with the addition of cellulose derivatives, pigments, fillers, oils and plastifiers, in the manufacture of coating compositions for metal and wood or moulding. In examples, commercial quebrachitol was condensed p with phthalic anhydride alone, or in the presence of linseed oil, fatty acids with or without tung oil, or a mixture of tung oil, cyclohexanol and tetrahydronaphthalene; quebrachitol partially esterified with colophony was condensed with phthalic anhydride; a condensation product of quebrachitol, phthalic anhydride, linseed oil fatty acids and tung oil was dissolved in white spirit and solvent naphtha to yield a coating composition; a condensation product of quebrachitol, phthalic anhydride and linseed oil fatty acids was dissolved in white spirit; inositol is heated with linseed oil and the product esterified with phthalic anhydride.
