Abstract

Synthetic resins are prepared by dissolving a fusible phenol aldehyde condensation product in a partial ester of a monobasic organic acid with a polyhydric alcohol and condensing the product with a polybasic organic acid or anhydride. The partial ester, which contains at least two free hydroxyl groups, is derived from monobasic acids such as acetic or benzoic acids or the acids derived from fats, vegetable oils or naturally occurring resins. The products, which are soluble in vegetable oils, may be used in the manufacture of varnishes and coating compositions. In examples a resin derived from o-cresol or p-tertiary butyl phenyl and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst is dissolved in glyceryl monolinoleate and the product condensed with phthalic anhydride.
