Abstract
In the manufacture of varnishes, a varnish resin is incorporated, at raised temperature and in the absence of solvent, into an alkyd-resinous oil containing the radicals of a polyhydric alcohol, a drying oil and a polybasic acid, and having an oil length which is not less than 50 per cent. A varnish is then formed by the addition of suitable solvents or thinners. A suitable alkyd-resinous oil may be prepared from phthalic anhydride, glycerol, linseed oil fatty acids, and linseed oil, while resins which may be incorporated include French resin, Congo copal, colophony, or materials known under the Registered Trade Marks of "Albertol" and "Bakelite."
