Abstract
A condensation product of the phenolaldehyde type and a condensation product of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, either or both of the condensation products being prepared in the presence of a natural resin, are brought together with the aid of heat. The two resins may be separately prepared or one resin may be prepared in the presence of the preformed second resin. In examples (1) paraformaldehyde, phenol, and colophony are condensed together and after water and excess phenol have been blown off by a stream of carbon dioxide glycerol and phthalic anhydride are added and the condensation completed; the product dissolves in a mixture of linseed and china wood oils to give a solution which on thinning with solvent naphtha gives a varnish; (2) the paraformaldehyde in example (1) is replaced by formaldehyde and, as a catalyst, phthalic anhydride to give a resin which dissolves in linseed or china wood oils giving a solution which may be thinned with turpentine or white spirit to give a varnish. Specification 334,572, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.ALSO:A condensation product of the phenolaldehyde type and a condensation product of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, either or both of the condensation products being prepared in the presence of a natural resin, are brought together with the aid of heat. The two resins may be separately prepared or one resin prepared in the presence of the preformed second resin and sufficient excess of polyhydric alcohol may be added so as to esterify the acid groups of the natural resin. In examples, (1) paraformaldehyde, phenol, and colophony are condensed together and after water and excess phenol have been blown off by a stream of carbon dioxide glycerol and phthalic anhydride are added and the condensation completed; the product dissolves in a mixture of linseed and china wood oils to give a clear solution which on thinning with solvent naphtha gives a varnish; (2) formaldehyde, phenol, phthalic anhydride (as a catalyst), and colophony are condensed together and after water and phenol have been blown off by a stream of carbondioxide phthalic anhydride and glycerol are added yielding a resin which dissolves in linseed or china wood oils to form solutions which may be thinned with white spirit and turpentine to give varnishes; (3) formaldehyde, xylenol, and colophony or formaldehyde, phenol, phthalic anhydride, and colophony are condensed together and after blowing with carbon dioxide glycerol and phthalic anhydride are added and the condensation finished; (5) glycerol and phthalic anhydride are condensed together and blended with a condensation product from formaldehyde, phenol, colophony, and phthalic anhydride which has been blown with carbon dioxide; (6) colophony, phthalic anhydride, and glycerol are condensed together, mixed with phenol and formaldehyde and after the condensation completed excess volatile matter is removed in a stream of carbon dioxide. Specification 334,572, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.ALSO:A condensation product of the phenol-aldehyde type and a condensation product of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol, either or both of the condensation products being prepared in the presence of a natural resin, are blended together with the aid of heat.
