Abstract

Resinous compositions are prepared by heat-a polyhydric alcohol, a vegetable oil and a natural resin to effect partial interaction, adding thereto an aromatic polybasic acid, an aliphatic polybasic acid and a phenol, heating the mixture and after cooling the product adding an aldehyde and cooking the mixture. The proportions of the ingredients are selected so that the final products contain alkyd resin, phenolaldehyde resin, drying oil and natural resins in proportion by weight, respectively, 40 to 70, 10 to 40, 5 to 35 and 2 to 20. Suitable ingredients specified in the examples and specification include: polyhydric alcohols-glycerol, mannitol, pentaerythritol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol; vegetable oils (or the corresponding fatty acids)-china wood, linseed, castor, corn, perilla, or soya bean oils; natural resins-abietic acid, wood rosin, dammar, kauri, copal, or pine wood pitch; aromatic polybasic acid (or anhydride or other resin forming derivative thereof)-phthalic anhydride; aliphatic polybasic acid-adipic, sebacic, glutaric, pimelic, suberic, fumaric, malic or maleic acids; phenols-xylenols, phenol, cresol, cresylic acid, p-phenylphenol, p-tertamylphenol, p-tertbutylphenol; aldehydes-formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde and furfural. The product, dissolved in a solvent such as n-butanol, amyl alcohol, monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol, monobutyl ether of ethylene glycol, monoethyl ether of diethylene glycol with or without a suitable diluent such as xylol or solvent naphtha, may be used as a coating composition and wire enamel.
