Abstract

A composition for coating metal is formed by cooking an oil-soluble varnish resin with a drying oil having an average of at least two double bonds in an acid radical in the presence of zinc oxide in the proportion of 0.5 to 2.5 per cent of the combined weight of the resin and oil at least until the zinc oxide has reacted and then thinning with a volatile solvent. The resin is an oil-soluble esterified natural resin such as glycerol-esterified copal. Specified drying oils are bodied dehydrated castor oil, chinawood oil, oiticica oil, maleated linseed oil, phenolized oils, isomerized linseed oil, the mannitol esters of linseed oil acids and acetylated oiticica oil. Driers such as manganese naphthenate may be added to the finished composition. Mineral spirits is a specified solvent.ALSO:An oleoresinous composition for coating metal is prepared by cooking an oil-soluble varnish resin with a drying oil having an average of at least two double bonds in an acid radical in the presence of zinc oxide in the proportion of 0.5 to 2.5 per cent of the combined weight of the resin and oil at least until the zinc oxide has reacted and then thinning with a volatile solvent. A preferred method comprises heating an oil-soluble rosin-modified phenol aldehyde resin with bodied dehydrated castor oil and zinc oxide at 560 DEG to 580 DEG F. until a viscosity of 8 to 11 seconds (No. 3 Zahncup) is attained, cooling to 450 DEG F. and diluting with a volatile solvent. Specified resins are oil-soluble rosin-modified phenolic resins, oil-soluble rosin-modified maleic-glycerol alkyd resins, oil-soluble esterified natural resins, and oil-soluble hydrocarbon resins from the polymerization of olefin-diolefin fractions of cracked petroleum distillates. Specified drying oils are bodied dehydrated castor oil, chinawood oil, oiticica oil, maleated linseed oil, phenolized oils, isomerized linseed oil, the mannitol esters of linseed oil acids and acetylated oiticica oil. Mineral spirits is a specified solvent and driers such as manganese naphthenate may be added to the finished composition.
