Abstract

1,146,694. Coating composition. REICHHOLD CHEMIE A.G. 11 March, 1966 [13 March, 1965], No. 10903/66. Headings C3B and C3R. [Also in Division C7] A heat curable, water dilutable, coating composition comprises an aqueous soln. or dispersion of a mixture of: (I) the reaction product of, (i) a hydrophilic plasticizing epoxy resin partial ester which contains free COOH and free OH groups and (ii) ammonia, a strong organic base, or a mixture thereof, and (II) a water-soluble or hydrophilic, low M.W., thermosetting aldehyde condensation product. Component (i) may be obtained by reacting an epoxy resin, especially a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A having M.W. 380-3500, with a polybasic carboxylic acid and an adduct of an α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (or an anhydride thereof) with an unsaturated fatty acid or mixture of such acids obtained by saponification of natural drying or semi-drying oils, e.g. castor oil or tall oil, or from rosin. The molar ratio of unsaturated monocarboxylic acid to α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (e.g. maleic acid) may be between 0À9 : 1 and 1À1 : 1. Component II may be a phenoplast or aminoplast. Conventional pigments may also be present in the composition. The coatings may be cross-linked by baking, e.g. at 170-190‹ C. for 30 to 20 minutes.
