Abstract

[Also in Division C7] A resinous compound suitable for use as a vehicle base in a water-thinnable paint is prepared by first esterifying a glycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol with sufficient unsaturated fatty acid containing 11 to 24 carbon atoms (e.g. linseed oil acid) to react with substantially all the hydroxyl groups provided by the glycidyl ether (the epoxy group is equivalent to two hydroxyl groups). The ester obtained is reacted with at least 8% by weight (of the total composition) of maleic anhydride and subsequently 0À25 to 0À75 of the carboxylic acid equivalents of reacted maleic anhydride are hydroxyalkylated to yield a compound having an acid value of at least 40. The initial gylcidyl ether may have a M.W. <700. Hydroxyalkylation may be effected, after hydrolysis of the anhydride groups, e.g. with an amine, by reaction with a 1,2-olefine oxide or with a glycol. Compositions are disclosed containing conventional pigments which may be applied to substrates by spraying, brushing, rolling or electrodeposition. The compositions may also be blended with aminoplasts to obtain a thermosetting coating composition.
