Abstract

500,348. Synthetic resinous compositions. PINCHIN, JOHNSON, & CO., Ltd., BEVAN, E. A., and TERVET, J. R. May 6, 1937, No. 13004. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group III] A process for preparing synthetic resinous compositions consists in heating to above 180‹ C., a mixture of an oil or oils containing less than ten per cent of bodies having conjugated double bond linkages, or of the acids derived from such oils by hydrolysis, with a carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof containing the alpha-# enal grouping -C=C-C=O, | or with a carboxylic acid which readily gives rise to a compound having such grouping on heating, in which at least one molecular proportion of such carboxylic acid or such derivative is employed for each molecular proportion of oil or for each three molecular proportions of the acid derived from such oil, as the oils are triglycerides. Examples of such oils are triglyceride esters of unsaturated fatty acids which have twelve or more carbon atoms, such as linseed, soya bean, cotton seed, sesame, olive menhaden and sardine oils. Examples' of the acid containing the alpha-# enal grouping are maleic and cinnamic acids. In an example, 140 parts by weight of varnish linseed oil were mixed with 49 parts by weight of maleic anhydride in a glass vessel through which a stream of carbon dioxide was passed. The whole was immersed in an oil bath and heated to 220‹ C. for two hours. A clear strawcoloured viscous mass was obtained of acid value 117, iodine value 105 (original iodine value of the oil was 185). The product is readily compatible with nitrocellulose and yields a flexible tough film with good adhesion to smooth surfaces. If 50 parts of varnish linseed oil are heated to 220‹ C. with 34 parts by weight of maleic anhydride, a hard brittle resin results, which is also compatible with nitrocellulose. Other examples describe the preparation of resins from linseed oil, soya bean oil, olive oil or cotton seed oil with maleic anhydride, the dibutyl ester of maleic acid or malic acid, all of which are compatible with nitrocellulose and readily soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons. The products range from viscose oils to hard brittle resins depending on the degree of unsaturation of the fatty ester or acid, and the proportion of maleic anhydride or like compound. The viscous oil products have quick-drying properties.
