Abstract

In the preparation of varnishes &c. an oil, e.g. chinawood or other vegetable oil, or an animal or fish oil, is heat treated with an oilinsoluble acid, such as boric, oxalic, acetic or citric acid, which allows polymerization and retards gelatinization of the oil, the treated oil being combined with a compatible synthetic resin. Oil-soluble phenol-formaldehyde and oil or fatty acid modified alkyd resins may be employed. Preferably, boric acid is employed and the oil may be heated therewith for a long or short period. In examples, the long or short treated oil is combined with phenolaldehyde or glycerol phthalate resin together with fatty acids, pigments, dyes and fillers. Nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate may in some cases be incorporated.
