Abstract
The free acidity present in synthetic resins containing such derivatives of carboxylic acids as esters and anhydrides is reduced by heating the composition with not more than 10% of its volume of an epoxidized oil, such as epoxidized soya bean oil, suitably at 230 DEG C. until a substantial reduction in the acid value is achieved. Resins which may be so treated are alkyds, p modified rosin acids, and rosin-modified natural and synthetic resins and their esters, and in particular a linseed oil-modified alkyd, a rosin-maleic anhydride ester, and a copal glycerol ester. Specification 859,467 is referred to.ALSO:The free acidity present in varnishes, oils, resins and other coating compositions containing such derivatives of carboxylic acids as esters and anhydrides is reduced by heating the composition with not more than 10% of its volume of an epoxidized oil, such as epoxidized soya bean oil, suitably at 230 DEG C. until a substantial reduction in the acid value is achieved. Substances which may be so treated include natural or modified vegetable and marine drying oils, e.g. linseed and dehydrated castor stand oils, rosin acids, and copal resins.
