[Classes 91 and 95] [Also in Group IV] A coating composition which is adapted to dry to a wrinkle finish comprises oil-soluble synthetic or natural resin, about 7 to about 10 parts of volume of dehydrated castor oil produced by heating castor oil at from about 480‹ to about 525‹ F. for about 2.5 hours, about 23 to about 35 parts of another wrinkling drying oil, and about 2 to about 8 parts of a non-wrinkling vegetable drying oil. Dehydrating agents such as alkali metal hydroxides, sulphur or halogen compounds may be present during the dehydration treatment. In an example, a varnish comprising an oil-modified phenolaldehyde resin, lead acetate, raw tung oil, linseed oil, a thinner consisting of toluol or petroleum naphtha or a mixture thereof, and a drier consisting of cobalt linoleate, wood oil fatty acids and toluol, is incorporated with a similar varnish but containing also dehydratedcastor oil. Pigments and texture-modifying ingredients such as asbestine and fatty acids may be incorporated in the varnishes, the phenolaldehyde resin may be replaced by an alkyd resin, rosin, ester gum or a fossil resin, the tung oil may be replaced by oiticica oil or a blown wrinkling oil which is non-wrinkling in the unblown condition, and the linseed oil may be replaced by perilla oil. The wrinkle finish may be produced by air-drying the compositions, by heating, or by treating with infra red radiation. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also (1) the preparation of a castor oil product by destructively distilling castor oil, or a mixture of castor oil with another vegetable drying oil, until the residue comprises about 70 per cent. of the original mass, esterifying the residue by the addition of glycerine or other polyhydric alcohol, and' condensing the product with phthalic anhydride or other polycarboxylic acid; (2) a drying oil varnish consisting of amberol, lead acetate, dehydrated castor oil, linseed oil, toluol and a drier consisting of cobalt linoleate, wood oil fatty acids, benzoyl peroxide and toluol.
