Abstract

Styrene and/or its polymerizable substitution derivatives is interpolymerized by heating with a resin acid, e.g. a natural resin containing at least one free carboxyl group, i.e. rosin, cracked copals, tall oil, the resin acid forming 10-90 per cent of the mixture. Specified styrene compounds are mono- and di-chloro- and methyl styrenes and commercial styrene. The product may be at least partially esterified by heating, if desired in presence of an esterifying catalyst, with an alcohol, preferably a polyhydric alcohol or a drying oil partial ester, e.g. an oil obtained by heating a drying or semi-drying oil with a polyhydric alcohol. The product may be mixed and dispersed by heating with a drying or semi-drying oil, or the oils may be added prior to the interpolymerization or esterification. The oils may be conjugated, listed are linseed, soybean, dehydrated castor, chinawood, oiticica and a fish oil extract resembling linseed oil. Polyhydric alcohols specified include glycerol, pentaerythritol, polypentaerythritol, sorbitol and mono- and poly-ethylene glycols. The interpolymerization is effected by heating, preferably at the reflux temperature of styrene. The styrene may be added portion-wise during the reaction. Percompound polymerization catalysts may be employed. The products may be used as coating compositions or printing inks, if desired with addition of drying or semi-drying oils, pigments, fillers, extenders, driers and solvents.
