Abstract
Copolymers of vinyl aromatic compounds, e.g. styrene, with polyhydric alcohol esters containing unsaturated fatty oil acid radicles are made by heating a preformed copolymer thereof with another such copolymer of different composition and/or with a vinyl aromatic compound and a polyhydric alcohol ester containing unsaturated fatty oil acid radicles or a mixture thereof. A varnish resin or ester thereof may be added to the mixture. The esters may be drying or semi-drying oils or oil-modified alkyd resins. The following may be reacted: (a) mixtures of styrenated drying or semi-drying oils; (b) mixtures of styrenated oil-modified alkyd resins; (c) mixtures of (a) and (b); (d) mixtures of (a) and drying or semi-drying oils; (e) mixtures of (b) and oil-modified alkyd resins; (f) mixtures of (a) and/or (b) with varnish resins and/or their esters. In examples, a mixture of a styrenated linseed oil-modified alkyd resin and a copolymer of (1), (5) and (6) styrene with linseed and oiticica oils or (2) styrene with linseed and dehydrated castor oils, or (3) styrene with linseed and wood oils, or (7) styrene with tall oil and dehydrated castor oil, is heated whilst gradually adding styrene; a mixture of (4) two different copolymers of styrene with linseed and wood oils and (8) styrenated linseed oil and linseed oil, is heated with gradual addition of styrene. The products may be used in making varnishes, printing inks and textile and paper finishing compositions.
