Abstract

Interpolymers of styrene, or alkyl or halogen nuclear substituted styrene, with an oil-modified alkyd resin or resins are made by heating with or without superatmospheric pressure a mixture of the components, optionally dissolved in a volatile solvent, e.g. xylol, in the presence of sulphur in an amount of from 1/2 to 5 per cent by weight calculated upon the oil content of the oil modified resin. Specified oil-modified alkyd resins are made by reacting (1) linseed oil fatty acids, glycerol, phthalic anhydride; (2) pentaerythritol, linseed oil fatty acids, phthalic anhydride; (3) castor oil, glycerine, phthalic anhydride; (4) castor oil, rosin, phthalic anhydride, glycerol. The interpolymers compounded with pigments, solvents, e.g. xylol, and driers, e.g. cobalt and lead naphthenates, may be used as coating or impregnating compositions or printing inks.
