Abstract
A printing ink of the kind which is set by applying water or steam in the form of a spray, and which comprises a water-miscible solvent component such as glycol, and a water-precipitable binder constituent such as a resin or a protein is rendered proof against being set by atmospheric moisture in the press room by the addition of a resinate of an alkylolamine such as triethanolamine resinate. This resinate may be prepared by mixing 61 per cent by weight of rosin with 26 per cent by weight of triethanolamine, heating to 250 DEG F., cooling to 200 DEG F. and adding 13 per cent water. Examples of inks are: (1) zein 8 parts by weight, trithanolamine resinate 6.5 parts, phenol resin 12 parts, water 4 parts, dipropylene glycol 18 parts, diethylene glycol 30 parts, carbon black 16 parts, alkali blue pigment 1 part, Milori blue pigment 2.5 parts, Violet Toner 2 parts; (2) shellac (de-waxed) 19 parts, triethanolamine resinate 19 parts, di-ethylene glycol 39 parts, carbon black 18 parts, Milori blue pigment 5 parts; (3) maleic-rosin modified resin (Registered Trade Mark "Teglac") 28.8 parts, triethanolamine resinate 14.4 parts, diethylene glycol 33.8 parts, carbon black 18 parts, Milori blue pigment 5 parts. Other ingrediates in further examples are Phenol resin (Amberol 226), and terpene maleic resin (Registered Trade Mark "Petrex"). The triethanolamine resinate may be replaced by mono- and di-alkylolamine resinates. Specification 468,384 is referred to.
