Abstract
A composition for use as a heat-drying printing ink drying under atmospheric conditions ranging from 100 per cent humidity downwards, comprises a pigment, a water-soluble synthetic resin and a hydroscopic solvent having a b.p. in the range 250-475 DEG F. Solvents specified are glycols, glycols ethers, diethylaminoethanol. Water-soluble resins specified are phenol-, urea-, melamine-formaldehyde resins and alkyd resins which are convertible to the insoluble state by the heat employed for drying the printed web. Insoluble resins may be used in conjunction with solvents therefore. The following compositions are specified in examples: (8) water-soluble phenol-formaldehyde resin, ethylene glycol, triethanolamine, carbon black, lampblack; (9) alkyd resin, ethylene glycol, triethanolamine, carbon black, lampblack; (10) rosin modified polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid resin, methyldiethanolamine, diethylene glycol, carbon black, alkali blue; (11) as in (10) but employing a rosin-maleic acid resin; (12) aryl sulphonamideformaldehyde resin, " carbowax, " methyldiethanolamine, diethyleneglycol, carbon black; (13) mannitol borate resin, phenol-formaldehyde resin, ethylene glycol, triethanolamine cerise, lithol red.
