Abstract

A moisture-setting printing ink comprises a dispersion of pigment in a glycol solution of a mixture of (1) either a novolak or a condensed cyclohexanone resin and (2) a drying or semi-drying oil modified alkyd resin. The novolak may be formed from formaldehyde and phenol or cresol. A suitable one is known as "Wresinoid 54." A suitable cyclohexanone resin is known as Howards M.S.2. The preferred alkyds are glycerine-phthalic acid condensates modified with linseed/tung, linseed or dehydrated castor fatty acids. Suitable ones are available under the names "Paralac" (Registered Trade Mark) or Wresinol. The preferred solvent is dipropylene glycol. Di- or tri-ethylene glycol may be used in admixture with hexylene glycol or a high boiling glycol ether. Driers, e.g. cobalt 2-ethyl-hexoate may be incorporated in the ink. If necessary the two resins are heated together to make them compatible and the solvent then added. In an example the pigment was "Monastral Green" (Registered Trade Mark) extended with a calcium carbonate extender known as Sturcal.
