Abstract

Condensation products suitable for use in the production of quick - drying varnishes are obtained by heating a mixture of an alkylated methylol melamine condensation product and a partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol and the acids of a semi-drying oil, the heating being initiated to remove free volatile alcohol and continued until combination between the condensate and ester takes place and the combined alcohol is removed by distillation. N-butanol modified melamine-formaldehyde resins in solutions of n-butanol and xylol are specified and the partial esters may be those formed from fatty acids of linseed, soya, dehydrated castor, oiticica, or tung oils and glycol, glycerol, sorbitol, mannitol or pentaerythritol. In examples: (1) 200 parts linseed monoglyceride and 70 parts 50 per cent solution of a butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin in n-butanol are mixed and heated slowly to 200 DEG C. for one hour during which period free and combined alcohol was removed and then further heated at 200 DEG C. for an hour when rapid bodying took place with further removal of combined alcohol. Addition of driers and thinners gave a varnish setting in 4 hours and drying in 12 hours; (2) linseed diglyceride was similarly reacted. Specifications 486,519, 486,577 and 533,998 are referred to.
