Abstract

A coating composition for protecting metals and their alloys comprises a low acid resin having an acid number of or below 90, drying oil, solvent, drier and zinc dust, at least 90 per cent of the zinc dust being capable of passing through a U.S. standard 400 mesh sieve. Urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde alkyd resins and ester gums are specified. The solvent may be xylol, toluol, naphtha, mineral spirits or petroleum solvents and it is preferred that the zinc dust has an average particle size of not more than 3 microns. Specified drying oils are oiticica, tung, dehydrated castor, linseed raw or blown and perilla oil while driers may be cobalt, lead or manganese naphthenates or linoleates or mixtures thereof in the form of a 4 per cent solution. The coating may be air dried, dried at up to 450 DEG F. or baked by infra-red light while an enamel, lacquer or wrinkle finish overcoat may be applied.ALSO:A coating composition for protecting metals and their alloys comprises a low acid resin having an acid number of or below 90, drying oils, solvent, drier and zinc dust, at least 90 per cent of the zinc dust being capable of passing through a U.S. standard 400 mesh sieve. Dammer gums are specified resins. The solvent may be xylol, toluol, naptha, mineral spirits or petroleum solvents and it is preferred that the zinc dust has an average particle size of not more than 3 microns. Specified drying oils are oiticica, tung, dehydrated castor, linseed raw or blown, and perilla oil while driers may be cobalt, lead or manganese naphthanates or linoleates or mixtures thereof, in the form of a 4 per cent solution. The coating may be air dried, dried at up to 450 DEG F. or baked by infra-red light, while an overcoating of enamel, lacquer or wrinkle finish may also be applied and baked either together with the undercoat or after it has been air dried to hardness.
