Abstract
Copolymers are prepared by heating under reflux styrene and polymerized or unpolymerized partial esters of polyhydric alcohols with unsaturated fatty acids of drying or semidrying oils. The partial esters may contain one or more hydroxyl groups and may be the glycerol, pentaerythritol, mannitol or sorbitol partial esters of the fatty acids of tung, linseed, soya bean or perilla oil. Catalysts, e.g. sulphur dioxide and b -methyl anthraquinone and aromatic, aliphatic or terpenic solvents may be used. In using partial esters of non-conjugated fatty acids, e.g. those from linseed and soya bean oils, the styrene is slowly added to the ester maintained at a temperature not below 180 DEG C. Polymerized or unpolymerized drying or semi-drying oils and natural or synthetic resins may be added at any stage. The products may be esterified with monobasic or polybasic acids, e.g. drying or semi-drying oil fatty acids or heated with glycerol and/or phthalic acid to form modified alkyd resins. White spirit and cobalt driers may be added to form air-drying varnishes. Specifications 573,809 and 580,912 are referred to.
