Abstract
Vinyl toluene (20-80 parts by weight) is interpolymerized with non-conjugated drying oils (80-20 parts by weight) by heating at 120-300 DEG C. in the substantial absence of added solvents and with or without catalysts such as cumene hydroperoxide and di-t-butyl peroxide. The drying oils may be linseed or soyabean oil, raw, refined, alkali-treated or heat-bodied, or modified with polyhydric alcohols, e.g. ethylene or propylene glycol, glycerine or pentaerythritol and polybasic acids, e.g. phthalic anhydride. In examples, vinyl toluene (60 per cent meta and 40 per cent para) mixed with cumene hydroperoxide is added portionwise to heat-bodied linseed oil heated under reflux to 230 DEG C.; un-bodied linseed, bodied and unbodied soyabean oils and a long-oil soyabean oil-modified glycerol phthalate alkyd resin are interpolymerized using t-butyl peroxide as catalyst to form clear ungelled resins, which may be dissolved in mineral spirits to give varnishes or further reacted to form alkyd resins.
