Abstract
Compositions which may be used for floor coverings are made by mixing a soft or liquid binding agent which yields a dry film under the influence of the oxygen of the air, or a solution of a substance which yields a dry film on evaporation of the solvent, or a mixture of both classes with a powdered inorganic filler moistened with water. As binding agents, linseed, tung and stand oils, lacquers obtained by dissolving natural or synthetic resins (such as alkyd and coumarone resins) in drying oils, naphtha or hydrocarbons are used. Driers, such as lead, manganese or cobalt naphthenates, linoleates or resinates may be added. As fillers stone meal, talcum, chalk, asbestos fibres or powder are mentioned, and leather dust, sawdust or cork dust, also pigments such as ochre, yellow iron hydroxide, chromium hydroxide, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and lithopone may be added. The filler is first moistened with water so that a friable mass is obtained, preferably in presence of a wetting agent which is soluble in both water and organic media; the binder is then admixed. The mass may then be spread on the floor (which is preferably first varnished) by means of a trowel or roller. In examples, a mixture of wood meal and stone meal with chalk, chromium oxide and talcum, or chromium oxide and zinc oxide is moistened with a solution of the wetting agent obtained by acting on castor oil with ethylene oxide, and a solution in linseed oil or solvent naphtha or white spirit of an alkyd resin (obtained from linseed oil fatty acid, glycerine and phthalic anhydride), which may be partially or completely replaced by coumarone resin, is added, together with a solution of lead manganese naphthenate in linseed oil, and thoroughly mixed in.ALSO:Compositions which may be used for floor coverings, are made by mixing a soft or liquid binding agent which yields a dry film under the influence of the oxygen of the air, or a solution of a substance which yields a dry film on evaporation of the solvent, or a mixture of both classes, with a powdered inorganic filler, moistened with water.
