Abstract

Compositions especially for floor or wall covering are prepared by incorporating, as such, a filling material comprising an inorganic and an organic component with an aqueous emulsion of a liquid natural or artificial water-resistant product which dries by autoxidation or polymerization or of a solution of a substance yielding a dry water-resistant film in the evaporation of the solvent, the said emulsion comprising an emulsifying agent soluble both in water and in oil. Drying products include oils such as linseed or tung oil or stand oil, or soft or liquid alkyd resins. The solutions include oil lacquers obtainable by dissolving in drying oils natural resins such as colophony, copal or esters thereof or artificial resins such as coumarone resins or modified alkyd resins, or solutions of cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, polymerized acrylic or methacrylic esters in volatile solvents such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, ethyl glycol butylether, or mixtures of the said solvents with aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzine, ligroin, benzene or toluene. Drying or softening agents such as naphthenates, linoleates of manganese or cobalt, tricresyl phosphate, dibutylphthalate, adipates, and phthalates may be added to the compositions. Suitable fillers include stone flour, gypsum, talcum, chalk, asbestos fibres, asbestos powder, kieselguhr, leather dust, sawdust and corkmeal, and pigments such as ochre, yellow iron hydroxide, chromium hydroxide, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and lithopone. Emulsifying agents include triethanolamine, ammonium salts of linseed oil fatty acids or oleic acid or reaction products of ethylene oxide or hydroxyl derivatives of compounds possessing long aliphatic chains such as castor oil. In examples: (1) an aqueous emulsion of a linseed oil fatty acid modified alkyd resin dissolved in linseed oil and lacquer benzine, containing lead manganese linoleate and a wetting agent obtained by the action of ethylene oxide and castor oil, is mixed with stone flour, talc, chalk, wood meal and chrome oxide green; the resulting mass may be rolled into a stone floor pretreated with a solution of coumarone resin in linseed oil and solvent naphtha; (2) an aqueous emulsion of a modified alkyd resin dissolved in benzine or petrol containing lead manganese linoleate and a castor oil-ethylene oxide emulsifying agent, is mixed with stone flour, red iron oxide and stone meal; (3) an aqueous emulsion of a modified alkyd resin dissolved in solvent naphtha, coumarone resin dissolved in linseed oil and stand oil, copal lacquer dissolved in turpentine oil, or colophony glycerine ester dissolved in solvent naphtha, containing lead linoleate and zinc naphthenate and a castor oil-ethylene oxide emulsifying agent, is mixed with stone flour, kieselguhr, red iron oxide and wood meal.ALSO:Compositions, especially for wall or floor covering, are prepared by incorporating, as such, a filling material comprising an inorganic and an organic component with an aqueous emulsion of a liquid natural or artificial water resistant product which dries by autoxidation or polymerization or of a solution of a substance yielding a dry water resistant film on evaporation of the solvent, the emulsion containing a water and oil soluble emulsifying agent. Suitable film forming products include drying oils such as tung, linseed or stand oil or solutions such as oil lacquers obtainable from natural resin and drying oils. Fillers include stone flour, gypsum, talcum, chalk, asbestos, kieselguhr, leather dust, sawdust, corkmeal, ochre, yellow iron hydroxide, chromium hydroxide, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and lithopone. Driers and plasticizers may be present. In an example, an aqueous emulsion of a copal lacquer dissolved in turpentine containing lead linoleate, zinc naphthenate and a castor oil-ethylene oxide emulsifying agent is mixed with stone flour, kieselguhr, red iron oxide and wood meal to yield a plastic composition.
