Abstract

Waterproof flexible sheet materials consist of polymerized esters of the acids of the acrylic acid series or mixtures thereof with polymerized other derivatives of acrylic acid with at least 10 per cent of their weight of finely divided amorphous fillers. Cork meal, wood meal, leather waste, fibres, chalk, carbon black, talc, sulphur are specified as fillers in quantities from 10 to 400 per cent. Softening agents such as castor oil, phthalic acid esters and phosphoric esters, and other film forming substances, for example, natural and artificial soft resins such as gum dammar, soft copals, colophony, toluene-sulphonamide resins, glycerol- or sorbitol-colophony esters, polymerization products of cyclohexanone, condensation products of toluene sulphonamide with carbonyl compounds, linoxyn, factice, cellulose esters, waxes, and beeswax may be added. The material may be applied to fabrics, if desired as an aqueous dispersion. In examples the film forming material consists of polymerization products of (1) acrylic methyl ester, (2) acrylic nitrile and acrylic methyl ester, (3) methyl and ethyl acrylic esters, (4) acrylic methyl ester, in conjunction with various fillers, pigments, &c.
