Abstract

A thermoplastic cement comprises a mixture of a wax-like halogenated polycyclic hydrocarbon and a natural resinous substance or a product thereof. Examples of halogenated hydrocarbons are tri- and tetra-chloronaphthalene and chlorinated anthracene. Suitable resinous substances are resin, shellac, copal, rubber and ester gums. In an example, ester gum, i.e. rosin neutralized with glycerin, is dissolved in an equal weight of molten chlorinated naphthalene comprising mainly a tri- or tetrachloronaphthalene. An addition of about 5 per cent of rubber latex gives increased tensile strength. In another example 70 parts of copal are added to 30 parts of chlorinated naphthalene. Preferably a plasticizer, e.g. 10 per cent of castor oil, is included. Specification 259,409, [Class 22, Cements &c.], is referred to.
