Abstract
540,049. Synthetic rubber compositions. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. March 29, 1940, No. 5670. Convention date, April 29, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group V] A material of high tensile strength and elasticity and resistance to chemical substances comprises a cured synthetic polymer prepared from a mixture of iso-olefinic and diolefinic materials and a material selected from natural rubber, synthetic rubbers and cellulose ethers or esters of organic acids. Examples of polymers are those from isobutylene or ethyl methyl ethylene with butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene or cyclopentadiene. Synthetic rubbers include neoprene, "Buna" (Registered Trade Mark), polyethylene and butadiene-acrylic acid nitrile copolymers. If isobutylene and butadiene are used for the polymerization they may be obtained from the gaseous products of the cracking of crude petroleum. The polymer is cured by heating with sulphur and, if desired, tetramethylthiuram mono- or di-sulphide. The cured product is milled and broken down on the mill, mixed with natural rubber which has also been broken down on a mill and the mixture is cured.
