Abstract

A composition comprises (1) 100 parts of a polymer of butadiene -1.3 containing at least 60% of its units in the cis-1-4 configuration, (2) from 25 to 75 parts of intermediate superabrasion furnace black and (c) from 0.5 to 1.5 parts of sulphur available for vulcanisation. Preferably the polybutadiene contains at least 90% cis-1.4, the furnace black is present as 50 parts and the sulphur as 1 part. There may also be present from 10 to 70 parts of a petroleum-based rubber processing oil in which case an extra part of furnace black is present for each 2 parts of oil. The polybutadiene may be mixed, in the proportion of 10 to 70%, for its 90 to 30%, of natural sulphur reclaimed rubber, polyisoprene or the elastomeric polymers and copolymers resulting from the emulsion polymerization of butadiene. The composition may contain the usual compounding ingredients and may be vulcanised. The tread portion of tires may be made from the vulcanite.
