Abstract

A vulcanized rubber composition comprises an extender oil and a copolymer of a conjugated diene with alpha-methyl styrene in an amount of at least 30% of the copolymer or with a mixture of alpha-methyl styrene and styrene in an amount of at least 30% of the copolymer, the amount of alpha-methyl styrene being at least 15% of the copolymer, and the amount of extender oil being from 15 to 50% of the copolymer. The total amount of alpha-methyl styrene and styrene (if present) may be up to 70% of the copolymer. Specified dienes are butadiene and isoprene while light mineral oil (liquid paraffin) or an aromatic fraction from mineral oil may be the extender oil. Fillers, e.g. carbon black in amount from 40 to 60% of the copolymer, antioxidants, antiozonants, and flex-cracking agents may also be present. Vulcanization is effected with sulphur (0 5-4% of the copolymer) and vulcanizing accelerators. The composition may be used to form the tread of a pneumatic tyre.
