Abstract

In a process for improving the properties of resins for use in varnishes and paints, an organic carbodiimide is reacted in an amount of from 0.1 to 25% by weight of the resin with an airdrying oil modified alkyd resin or air-drying fatty acid modified alkyd resin. The carbodiimide may be an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic monoor poly-carbodiimide, and may be reacted with the resin at 60 to 150 DEG C. In examples 2:21, 6:61-tetraisopropyldiphenyl carbodiimide is reacted with alkyd resins containing linseed oil, with an alkyd resin containing soya bean oil, and a polycarbodiimide prepared from 1:3:5-triisopropylbenzene-2:4-diisocyanate (as described inSpecification 930,036) is reacted with an alkyd resin containing linseed oil; the products are pigmented with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and naphthenate driers added.ALSO:In a process for improving the properties of oils and resins for use in varnishes and paints, an organic carbodiimide is reacted in an amount of from 0.1 to 25% by weight of the oil with a drying oil, semi-drying oil, stand oil or air thickened oil of turpentine. The carbodiimide may be an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic mono- or poly-carbodiimide, and may be reacted with the oil at 60 DEG to 150 DEG C. In an example 2:21, 6:61-tetraisopropyldiphenyl carbodiimide is reacted with a linseed stand oil, the product is pigmented with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and naphthenate driers are added. Soya bean oil and castor oil also are mentioned and a list of carbodiimides is given. Specification 930,036 is referred to.
