Abstract

A setting oil for use in foundry practice (see Group XXII) is obtained by esterifying tall oil and/or tall oil fatty acids and/or fatty acids from semi-drying oils (with or without fatty acids obtained in the refining of drying oils) with a polyhydric alcohol, and thereafter desliming, isomerizing and polymerizing the product. The esterification preferably proceeds at 160-280 DEG C. to an acid number below 15, the polyhydric alcohol used being suitably di- or tri-pentaerythritol, but preferably pentaerythritol itself; the subsequent desliming, isomerization and polymerization are invariably performed simultaneously at 300-330 DEG C. to a viscosity of 150-350 P20o. The resinic acid content of the final product is adjusted to less than 25% by suitable proportioning of the starting materials, and 5-15% of a conjugated oil such as wood oil may be added to the initial mixture to accelerate the polymerization.
