Abstract

Esters of doubly unsaturated alcohols are produced by treating an unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde with an acid anhydride in the presence of an anhydrous salt of the corresponding acid. It is stated that an unsaturated aldehyde reacts with acetic anhydride in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid to form the aldehyde diacetate. Examples describe the production of an ester from crotonaldehyde and acetic anhydride in the presence of anhydrous sodium and potassium acetates respectively.
