Abstract

Cyclohexa - 1,4 - diene - 1,4 - dicarboxylic acid or acid esters or diesters thereof are made by heating cyclohexane-2,5-diol-1,4-dicarboxylic acid or an acid ester or diester thereof in the liquid phase in presence of water or an aliphatic alcohol of at most four carbon atoms at above 150 DEG C. but in the absence of a hydroxide or an alkoxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. In examples, dimethyl cyclohexane-2,5 - diol - 1,4 - dicarboxylate was heated with (1) water, to give cyclohexa-1,4-diene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid; and (2) methanol, to give the dimethyl ester of the same acid, and also some of the lactone, 4 - carbomethoxy - 2-hydroxy-6-oxa-bicyclo-[3,2,1]-octa-7-one.
