Abstract

Esters of pyridine carboxylic acids are obtained by heating the acids with excess of a monohydric alcohol or with a polyhydric alcohol, without catalysts and without removal of the water formed, in pressure-vessels at about 120 DEG -200 DEG C. The excess of alcohol is distilled and the ester purified. In examples, the ethyl, n-butyl, cyclohexyl, and n-propyl esters of nicotinic and isonicotinic acids are prepared by this method. Other esters referred to include esters of the above acids, and also of chlorinated or brominated pyridine mono- or dicarboxylic acids, with methyl, hexyl, isopropyl and benzyl alcohols, glycols, glycol ethyl ether, glycerol, chloroalcohols and triethanolamine. Polyhydric alcohols may be esterified with one or more molecules of the same or different acids.
