Abstract
1 : 2-Olefines containing at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule are heated with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an aliphatic acid having not less than two and not more than four carbon atoms whereby glycols are produced. In an example, 1 : 2-hexadecene dissolved in glacial acetic acid is treated with hydrogen peroxide to give the mono acetyl derivative of 1 : 2-hexadecanediol, which is saponified to obtain the corresponding glycol. A small quantity of a monobasic acid is also obtained. The a -oxysulphuric esters and a -oxysulphonic acids of the glycols are mentioned. The glycols are stated to be emulsifying-agents.ALSO:Higher glycols derived, by oxidation, from 1 : 2-olefines having at least eight carbon atoms are stated to have emulsifying properties.
