Abstract

The esterification of higher alcohols, such as amyl or butyl alcohol, with fatty acids, such as acetic acid, is effected in two stages; first, partial esterification is effected in the presence of a dehydrating-agent, such as sulphuric acid, usually at normal temperature; the dehydrating-agent is then removed, and the esterification continued at a higher temperature, e.g. by distillation. Examples are given of the preparation of amyl and butyl acetates.
