Abstract
Unsaturated compounds of the androstane and pregnane series containing at least two oxygen atoms attached to the ring carbon atoms are prepared by subjecting unsaturated compounds of the androstane or pregnane series which contain at least one hydroxyl group or esters thereof to the action of agents which split off water or acid. Suitable unsaturated parent materials may be obtained according to Specification 486,854. The preferred method of removal of water or acid is by the action of heat. In the cases where the hydroxyl group to be split off is esterified with halogen hydride, the splitting agent may be an alkaline material such as pyridine, or quinoline. Starting materials mentioned are D 5-androstentriol-3-7-17, and its esters such as the tri-benzoate, which may be obtained by reduction of D 5-7-oxo - androstendiol - 3 : 17 or of D 5 - 7 - oxoandrostenol-3-one-17. In examples: (1) D 5-androstentriol - tribenzoate - 3 - 7 - 17 is subjected to vacuum distillation and the distillate recrystallized from alcohol; (2) D 5 - 7 - oxoandrostendiol-3 : 17-diacetate is boiled with caustic potash for 20 minutes, diluted with water and worked up to give D 3-D 5-androstandienol-17-one-7.
