Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formul <FORM:0774082/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 represents hydrogen or an organic acid residue and R2 represents an organic acid residue, and the preparation of pregnane derivatives characterized in that 11-dehydro sarmentogenin or esters thereof is subjected to a treatment for opening the lactone ring with the aid of ozone to produce a glyoxylic acid ester and subsequently the reaction product is saponified in alkaline medium as a result of which 3b ,14b , -21-trihydroxypregnanedione-11,20 or its 3b -3b -monoester is formed. The 3b ,14b ,21-trihydroxypregnanedione-11,20 or the mono-ester thereof can be converted into the diacyloxypregnene-14-dione-11,20, which may be hydrogenated to the corresponding pregnane compound, by esterification of the 21-hydroxy group and splitting off by means of a dehydrating agent the 14-hydroxyl group in any sequence.
