Abstract
The invention comprises an 11b (18)-epoxy pregnane derivative characterized in that either there is a keto group at the 3-position, a methyl and a hydrogen atom on the 18-carbon atom, a double bond at the 4-position, and an hydroxy group, an acyloxy group or a keto group at the 20-position; or there is a ketal group at the 3-position, a double bond at the 5-position, a methyl group and a hydrogen atom on the 18 carbon atom, and an acyloxy group at the 20-position; the acyl group in the acyloxy group being derived from an aliphatic carboxylic acid; and the A, B, and D rings being otherwise saturated or unsaturated and a process for the production of an 11b (18)-epoxypregnane derivative, which comprises treating an 11b (18), 18(20b )-diepoxy-18#x-pregnane derivative having the following partial general formula: <FORM:0973896/C1/1> with an aliphatic carboxylic anhydride in the presence of boron trifluoride so as to yield the corresponding 11b (18)-epoxy-18-methylene-20b -acyloxy-pregnane derivative having the following partial general formula: <FORM:0973896/C1/2> wherein Ac-represents the acyl radical derived from the aforesaid aliphatic carboxylic acid anhydride. Said 11b (18)-epoxy-18-methylene-20b -acyloxy-pregnane derivative thus produced may be selectively reduced by catalytic hydrogenation to obtain the corresponding 11b (18)-epoxy-18#x-methyl-20b -acylox pregnane derivative having the partial formula: <FORM:0973896/C1/3> which may be saponified so as to yield the corresponding 11b (18) - epoxy-18#x - methyl-20b -hydroxy-pregnane which finally may be oxidized so as to yield the corresponding 11b (18)-epoxy-18#x-methyl-pregnane-20-one derivative.
