Abstract

The invention comprises estradiol esters of the formula:-<FORM:0876903/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 represents hydrogen, a lower fatty acid acyl group of less than seven carbon atoms, benzoyl or undecenoyl, and R2 is undecenoyl, together with a process for the preparation of estradiol 17-undecenoate by esterifying estradiol or a 3-mono-ester thereof with undecenoyl chloride and selectively saponifying the 3-ester group of the resultant 3,17-diester. In Examples:- (1) undecenoyl chloride is added to estradiol in pyridine with cooling, after 15 hours the mixture is heated on steam bath, diluted with water, the di-undecenoate isolated with ether and partially saponified with potassium carbonate in aqueous methanol, giving estradiol 17-undecenoate, also prepared (2) from estradiol 3-benzoate or acetate by treatment with undecenoyl chloride and saponification as in (1).
