Abstract

The invention comprises the 17a tetrahydropyranyl ethers of pregnenolone-3-acetate, pregnenolone and progesterone and the method of producing compounds of the general formula <FORM:0878725/IV (b)/1> in which R is hydrogen or a 2 to 7 carbon acylic aliphatic radical which comprises reacting 17a -hydroxypregnenolone- 3-acetate with 2,3-dihydropyran and phosphorus oxychloride to form 17a -tetrahydropyranyl ether of pregnenolone 3-acetate, saponifying the latter compound at position 3 by treatment with alcoholic alkali solution to form the corresponding ether of pregnenolone, oxidising by the Oppenauer reaction with aluminium isopropoxide to form the corresponding ether of progesterone and either hydrolysing with acid to form 17a -hydroxyprogesterone or esterifying with an acyl anhydride to form mainly the mono ester of 7a -acyloxy progesterone. Examples illustrate the preparation of the tetrahydropyranyl ethers of pregnenolone 3-acetate, pregnenolone and progesterone, 17a -hydroxyprogesterone and 17a -acetate and 17a -caproate thereof.
