Abstract
Straight-chain aliphatic carboxylic acids (more than 4C) are prepared by forming an alkali melt of an unbranched 1, 2-diol (6-30 C) and/or its complete or partial ester with an aliphatic carboxylic acid( 1-4 C) and forming a free acid from the salt. Unbranched [alpha]-olefines (6-30 C) may be hydroxylated with per-acids (e.g. peracetic acid or a solution thereof, formic acid/hydrogen peroxide mixtures, or acetic acid/sulphuric acid/hydrogen peroxide mixtures) followed by alkali melt treatment. The alkali melt treatment, preferably with sodium or potassium hydroxide, may be under pressure with up to 50% of water and at 170-360 C. Examples describe the treatment ofn-dodecanediol-1,2 to prepare n-undecanoic acid, n-hexanediol-1,2 to prepare n-valeric, a C 12 -C 19 -nalkandiol-1,2 mixture to prepare the corresponding acid and the oxidation of n-dodecene- 1 with hydrogen peroxide and formic acid followed by the oxidation dehydrogenation to n-undecanoic acid.
